Choose a swing gate if the ground is level and you have arc room. Choose a sliding gate if the driveway slopes uphill, if there is no room to swing, or if a car would have to wait in the road. Those three conditions settle most of these decisions before cost even comes up.
Cost matters too — sliding gates run 20 to 50 percent more installed — but geometry decides first. A cheaper gate that binds on the slope is not cheaper.
The comparison
| Swing gate | Sliding gate | |
|---|---|---|
| Installed cost | Lower | 20–50% higher |

| Works on an uphill slope | Poorly or not at all | Yes |
| Wind performance | Sail on a hinge | Better |
| Cycle speed | 12–20 seconds | 20–35 seconds |
| Traditional appearance | Yes | Less so |
| Operator cost | Lower | Higher |
| Maintenance points | Hinges, posts | Rollers, track or cantilever bearings |
The slope test
Stand at the gate opening and look at which way the ground goes.
Level, or falling away in the direction of opening: a swing gate works. This is most suburban driveways.
Rising in the direction of opening: a swing gate will bind. The bottom of the leaf has to stay above the ground through its entire arc, so the gate ends up hung high with a large gap at the bottom, which looks wrong and lets everything the gate was meant to stop walk right under it. You can swing outward instead, but that means swinging into the road, which is unsafe and often prohibited.
Any real slope at all: slide.
This one test explains most sliding gates you see. They are rarely a style choice. They are what the site demanded.
Room: the constraint people forget
Sliding gates need somewhere to go.
Rolling (V-track or wheel) slide gates run on a track in the ground and need clear space along the fence line roughly equal to the opening width plus a bit of overlap. A 14-foot opening needs about 16 feet of clear run.
Cantilever slide gates carry no track on the ground. The gate is supported by roller assemblies on posts, and a counterbalance tail extends past those posts. That tail is why cantilever gates need roughly 50 percent more length than the opening — a 14-foot opening wants around 21 feet of clear side room.
Cantilever costs more and is worth it where a ground track would fill with debris, sit in a drainage path, or cross a slope. No track on the ground also means nothing to shovel, sweep, or bend.
Measure that side room before you fall in love with a slide gate. It is the constraint that ends the conversation on narrow lots.
Where swing gates genuinely win
Cost. Both the gate and the operator are cheaper, and there is less structure to build.
Appearance. A dual swing gate reads as an entrance in a way a slide gate does not. If the look is the point — an estate entry, a formal courtyard — swing is what people picture.
Speed. Twelve to twenty seconds versus twenty to thirty-five. Trivial on paper, noticeable at 7 a.m. in the rain.
Simplicity. Fewer moving parts at ground level, nothing to clog with gravel or leaves.
Pedestrian access. Easier to add a matching pedestrian gate alongside.
Where sliding gates genuinely win
Slopes. Covered above, and it is the big one.
Tight approaches. Where a swing arc would hit a parked car, a retaining wall, or the garage.
Roads where stopping is bad. If your driveway meets a fast or blind road, a slide gate that starts opening as you approach means less time sitting in a traffic lane.
Wind. A solid-panel swing gate is a sail on a hinge, and in a windy market that cyclic load works on the hinge post relentlessly. Slide gates distribute load along multiple points.
Wide openings. Past about 20 feet, dual swing leaves get heavy and hard to keep from sagging. Slide handles wide spans more gracefully.
What both need to get right
Whichever you pick, the failure points are the same two things.
Structure — and it is not the same structure for both. A swing leaf is a cantilever: one post takes the entire weight as a twisting load, and an undersized one produces the sag people blame on the gate three years later. Our wrought iron gate guide lists the post sizes and footing depths that prevent it. A cantilever slide gate loads a footing pad beside the opening instead, through the roller carriages and the counterbalance tail, and its failure mode is a pad that settles and drops the gate out of level. Ask which of the two your quote is actually pricing.
Compliance if it is automated. ASTM F2200 governs automated gate construction — limits on gaps that could trap a hand, guards over exposed rollers, and a requirement that a slide gate cannot simply topple if a roller fails. UL 325 governs the operator and requires two independent means of entrapment protection. Our gate opener cost guide covers what that adds to a quote.
The recommendation
Level ground, room to swing, budget matters: swing gate. It is the right answer more often than not, and paying extra for a slide gate you do not need is a common mistake.
Any uphill slope, tight side clearance, busy road, or opening over 20 feet: slide gate, and specifically cantilever if the ground track would sit in a drainage path or on a grade.
And the honest note: if the gate is going to be manual and opened twice a week, buy a swing gate and stop reading. All of the sliding gate's advantages are about automation, geometry, and daily use. For a farm entrance you open on weekends, a well-hung swing gate on solid posts costs a fraction and will outlive both of us. Our comparison of farm gates and estate gates covers that end of the range.

- Swing Gates →
A swing gate at a shared entry is a governance object as much as a mechanical one. Where the leaf travels, who it can reach, and who answers for it are all settled long before anyone chooses a hinge.
- Wrought Iron Gates →
Inside a community an iron gate is rarely a blank sheet. It has to satisfy a standard somebody else wrote, sit beside gates that already exist, and pass a review by people who had no part in designing it.
- Automatic Gate Openers & Operators →
At a community entrance the operator is not really a motor, it is a service relationship. Somebody has to hold the programming and somebody has to be called when it stops, and both of those people change every few years.
- Driveway Gates →
Most Henderson homes that want a driveway gate already sit inside a gated community. That changes the question entirely.
- Sliding & Rolling Gates →
At a shared entrance, a slide gate is chosen for one thing: throughput. How quickly the opening clears decides whether residents complain, and resident complaints are what put a gate onto a board agenda.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, a sliding gate or a swing gate?
Swing gates cost less and look more traditional, and they are the default when the ground is level and there is room for the arc. Sliding gates are the answer when the driveway slopes, when there is no room to swing, or when a vehicle would have to stop in the road while the gate opens.
How much room does a sliding gate need?
A conventional rolling slide gate needs clear space along the fence line roughly equal to the opening width plus overlap. A cantilever slide gate needs about 50 percent more than the opening, because the counterbalance tail has to extend past the rollers. That side room is the constraint that rules slide gates out on tight lots.
Can you put a swing gate on a sloped driveway?
Only if the ground falls away in the direction the gate opens, and even then the leaf has to clear the rise through its whole arc. On an upward slope a swing gate binds within a couple of feet. This is the single most common reason we recommend a slide gate instead.
Are sliding gates more expensive?
Yes, typically 20 to 50 percent more installed. The gate is longer than the opening, cantilever versions need substantial support posts, and the operator costs more. What you buy for that is a gate that works where a swing gate cannot.
Which handles wind better?
Sliding gates, generally. A swing gate is a large sail on hinges, and a solid-panel swing leaf in a windy area puts real cyclic load on the hinge post. Slide gates take wind load into rollers and posts along their length rather than into one pivot point.
Which is faster to open?
Swing gates, usually — a typical residential swing operator cycles in about 12 to 20 seconds versus 20 to 35 for a slide gate of similar span. If you are impatient at your own driveway, that difference is noticeable every single day.

How this applies in Henderson, NV
Every article here is written from gate work done in Henderson and the Las Vegas Valley, so the numbers reflect local labour, permit and material costs rather than a national average. Your own job can land either side of them depending on access, the condition of what is already there, and the materials you pick — wrought iron and ornamental steel fabrication, powder-coated aluminum gates, cantilever and roller slide gates.
