A farm gate contains things. An estate gate announces things. The first costs $400 to $900 installed and is a galvanized tube gate on solid posts. The second costs $2,500 to $8,000 and is a fabricated ornamental entrance. Both are correct answers to different questions.
The mistake is buying one when you wanted the other — usually buying a farm gate and then trying to automate it, or buying an estate gate for a property where a tube gate would have done the job for a tenth of the price.
What each one actually is
Farm / ranch gate. Galvanized round or square tube, welded into a light frame, usually with four to six horizontal rails or a mesh panel. Standard widths of 10, 12, 14, and 16 feet. Hung on a wood or steel post with a simple pin-and-eye hinge that lets you lift the gate off entirely. Designed to be light enough for one person to swing open on foot, strong enough to keep cattle in, and cheap enough to have several of them.
Estate gate. Custom fabricated, usually ornamental steel or welded aluminum, sized to a specific opening. Heavier frame, hung on substantial posts with proper footings, typically automated with access control. Designed as the entrance to a property rather than as a barrier across a field.

Why you cannot just automate a farm gate
This is the most common disappointment in this category, so it is worth explaining.
A stock tube gate is intentionally light and slightly flexible. That is a feature when a person is swinging it and a problem when a motor is. An operator applies force at one point, and a flexible frame absorbs some of that as flex rather than motion. Over a few thousand cycles you get a gate that has worked itself out of square, a hinge point that has elongated, and an operator that has been fighting a moving target.
You also cannot easily make a stock gate comply with ASTM F2200, the standard governing automated gate construction, which limits gaps that could trap a hand and requires certain design protections. A four-rail tube gate has gaps everywhere by design.
If automation is the goal, buy a gate built for it, even if you want it to look plain.
The middle option most people actually want
There is a large gap between $700 and $6,000, and most residential properties belong in it.
A rigid welded gate in a plain style — vertical pickets, horizontal slats, or a simple ranch pattern — on properly sized posts, with an operator. Roughly $1,800 to $4,000 installed depending on width and automation.
It looks intentional rather than agricultural, it works reliably with a motor, and it skips the ornamental fabrication labor that drives estate gate pricing. Scrollwork is where estate gate budgets go, and scrollwork does nothing functionally.

Where the money goes on an estate gate
If you do want the full entrance, know what you are paying for:
- Design density. Every scroll, every cast element, every twist is labor
- Width and height. Dual swing leaves over 8 feet each get heavy fast
- Posts and footings. Real structure, real concrete, real depth
- Finish system. Hot-dip galvanizing before powder coat is the durable spec and it costs more than powder coat alone

Two "estate gate" quotes can differ by $4,000 and both be honest. They are describing different amounts of steel and different finish systems.
The security conversation, honestly
People buy heavier gates for security, and it is mostly the wrong lever.
A determined vehicle goes through almost any residential gate — that is what crash-rated barriers are for, and they are a different product category at a different price. What residential gates actually do is deter casual entry, stop opportunistic vehicles, keep dogs and children in, and make the property feel closed.
What improves that materially is not gate mass. It is:
- A fence line the gate connects to. A magnificent gate with open ground on either side is an expensive suggestion
- Access control that people actually use, rather than a gate left open all day for convenience
- Lighting and sightlines at the entrance

When to buy the cheap gate and stop
We would rather say this than sell you something you do not need.
If the gate marks a boundary, keeps livestock or dogs in, and gets opened by hand a few times a week, buy the farm gate. A galvanized tube gate on two properly set posts is genuinely excellent value, will last decades, and can be replaced in an afternoon by one person if a tractor ever meets it.
If the property is a working one, buy several cheap gates rather than one expensive one. Field access, equipment access, back entrance. Function beats presentation on land that gets worked.
Buy the estate gate when the entrance is seen daily, when it is part of how the property presents, when it will be automated, and when it connects to a fence that makes it mean something.
The part that outlasts the gate
Posts. Whichever gate you buy, the posts and footings determine how long it works. Undersized posts on a farm gate produce a gate that drags in year six; undersized posts on an estate gate produce the same result with a bigger repair bill. Depth below the frost line where that applies, adequate footing diameter, and a post sized to the leaf it carries.
